KYLE BORDEN CAPTURES NSCS
MODIFIED FEATURE AT SHASTA SPEEDWAY

Anderson, CA.... April 28, 2012..... With only three laps to go in the 50 lap event, Kyle Borden of Cottonwood did a “bump-and-run” on leader Guy Young of Redding, moved Young out of his way and drove to victory Saturday night at Shasta Speedway. It was the prestigious Pop Porter Cup IX at Shasta as well as the first 2012 event of the North State Challenge Series for Modifieds. The Porter family donated extra money to the purse making it a $950 payday for Borden.

Fast heat race winner Randy Houston of Medford, Oregon, drew the “zero” pill which put him on the pole for the feature with Richie Potts of Pelatuma on the outside front row. Young and Borden started in row two with Jon Vanderpool and Oregon racer Rich Cobb next in line.

The first mishap happened on lap two when Young was running close to Potts, contact was made, the pack slowed starting a change reaction that saw Potts, Sean Hayes, Devin LaHorgue, Vanderpool and Cobb all stopped up against the wall in turn four. Cobb was towed to the pits and Hayes pitted for repairs but returned at the back of the pack

Two rounds later Hayes' throttle appeared to stick, his car bolted out the exit gate in turn one, climbed over the barrier wall, went into the pits and hit the personal truck owned by Anderson Towing's Mike Hubert. Another personal vehicle was also hit before Hayes' car came to a rest. There were no injuries other than the damage to the two pick-up trucks.

Young had inched by Houston just before the yellow so he lead the pack to the next restart. The next 10 laps saw Borden working hard on Houston until the pass for second was completed on lap 12. At the same time Donnie Brown retired his car to the pits. Meanwhile Potts was working his way back to the front.

Lap 18 saw Michael Morrison Jr. slap the front-stretch wall and the following round he was black-flagged for excessive smoking. At the half-way marker it was Young, Borden, Houston, Rich Lindgren, Potts, Mike Wright, Brian King, Micah Parmer and Jim Badeker.

Potts challenged Lindgren the last 10 rounds and finally moved into fourth on Lap 41. Borden pulled along side Young several times in the closing laps but each attempt dropped him back in line. It was on lap 47 when Borden gave Young a shove coming out of turn two that broke Young's car loose long enough for Borden to make the winning pass. Young settled for second with Houston third, Potts fourth and Lindgren fifth.

Mike Wright set fast time of 16.387 over the 15 car field and heat wins went to King and Houston.
